There has been a lot of talk about an Independence Day 2 movie being made for many years now and, while we thought that there would be no chance of the film taking place without the involvement of Will Smith, it seems that this is far from the case, as Roland Emmerich and his team are pushing forward with their plans for Independence Day 2.

Jessie Usher has been cast
Instead of having Will Smith in the lead role for Independence Day 2, the movie will see the characters son leading the way, which has led to a lot of casting rumours for the role. While it was suggested that the role would ultimately go to Michael B. Jordan, it has now been revealed that the character will actually be played by the relative unknown Jessie Usher.
Jessie Usher has been proving himself on the acting scene over the past few years and starring in Independence Day 2 will really give him the platform he needs to take his career to the next level. Meanwhile, it has also been confirmed that Liam Hemsworth has joined the cast of Independence Day 2, while Jeff Goldblum will reprise his role from the first movie.

Jeff Goldblum will reprise his role
Independence Day 2 is scheduled to begin shooting later in the year, with a release date set for June 24, 2016 in the US and July 1, 2016 in the UK. Meanwhile, it is also expected that a third instalment of the franchise will be made, with the possibility of shooting back to back, and a release date for Independence Day 3 likely to be some time in 2017.
