Luol Deng is going to make the Chicago Bulls regret not signing him to a major extension during the offseason. Since the Derrick Rose injury he has become once again the offensive fulcrum of the Bulls. If he were not able to play at the elite level he has played at since Rose’s injury this team would be fighting with the Milwaukee Bucks for last place in the NBA.
Deng has quietly transformed himself into one of the most consistent small forwards in the NBA. Any discussion of the top small forwards must include Luol Deng because of how he impacts the game at both the defensive and offensive ends of the court. This versatility will be in great demand at the conclusion of the season and will result in him leaving the Bulls for greater riches.
The Chicago Bulls are in the process of making a classic mistake of desiring what they don’t have and not appreciating the elite basketball player they do have in Luol Deng. Corporations always want the individual who will do the little things and not require excess pats on the back for doing their job. The Bulls have one in Luol Deng and because they resisted signing him to a contract extension worthy of an individual of his stature it is going to cost them dearly.
Whichever team is able to sign Luol Deng in the offseason is going to feel like they have won the NBA lottery because they will be obtaining a player of superstar ability with a desire to show his past employer that they made a mistake in not signing him earlier. The Chicago Bulls should enjoy the presence of Luol Deng with them in this 2013-2014 season because this will be his last season in the Windy City and his absence will be greatly felt in the win loss column of this franchise.
