There is a travesty that has taken place in the world of entertainment and it is the removal of Avery Brooks from Hollywood. He is best known for his performance as Captain Sisko on “Star Trek: Deep Space Nine” but he has not had a regular role on a television series since 1999 and he has not been active in Hollywood with his most recent role being voice work on a Star Trek video game in 2006 and attending Star Trek conferences. Avery Brooks basically fell off the map of Hollywood and considering that he possesses one of the most distinguishable voices in the entertainment business that is a waste of talent but what happens when one is not prepared for the end of a role.
There are some very distinguishable voices in Hollywood: James Earl Jones, Robin Williams, Avery Brooks. When these men speak whether it be as an animated character or in some on screen role they are immediately recognizable.
Avery Brooks was an actor who seemed to exude control and calmness at all times when he commanded his Star Trek ship. For years many entertainment observers have wondered why he is no longer a desired entity within Hollywood despite being an experienced thespian with an excellent reputation as a practitioner of acting.
The question for many people within the entertainment industry is whether Avery Brooks will ever make a return to television or will he be forever consigned to life as an attendee at Star Trek conferences? His lack of presence on the television should send a message to all those who pursue a career in acting that an individual should always have an idea of what the next step in their career will be following the completion of a role no matter how successful that role is within a television series.
