As a comedy film written and directed by a woman, The To Do List is already a rarity in Hollywood. We rarely see pure comedy films - not romantic comedies - centered around a female lead, especially when the film is as raunchy as The To Do List. However, writer/director Maggie Carey and star Aubrey Plaza are looking to change that with The To Do List, which is basically about a high school student who wants to lose her virginity before she goes off to college.

When discussing the scene where she loses her virginity, Aubrey explains, "It was a nightmare. I was like, this is the weirdest acting job I’ve ever had in my life.”
Maggie Carey also added that she wanted to make sure to differentiate the film from a romantic comedy, calling it a 'comedy comedy'. She explained, "It wasn’t about love, she wasn’t looking to get married, she was just like, ‘He is hot' and she wants him. Women have those feelings as much as men. You don’t see it a lot in this genre of movie, so that was important to me. I was so adamant about, this is not a romantic comedy, this is a comedy-comedy."
